Boiler coal consumption calculator
Put in your boiler's steam output and pressure. It works out how much coal the boiler burns per hour, day and month, how much steam each kilogram of coal makes, and the monthly coal bill.
1 How much steam does the boiler make?
The boiler's rated output, or what it actually makes on a normal day.
2 At what pressure?
Gauge pressure, as on the boiler's pressure gauge.
3 Which coal?
4 How efficient is the boiler?
A well kept chain grate boiler runs at about 70 to 78%. Old or poorly tuned ones, nearer 60%.

Feed water temperature
Higher with condensate return. About 30 °C with none, 60 to 90 °C with good return.

Each kilogram of steam carries a known amount of heat at a given pressure (from steam tables), minus the heat already in the feed water. Multiply by the steam output to get the heat the boiler must deliver every hour.
The boiler only passes part of the coal's heat into the steam; the rest goes up the chimney and into the ash. Divide the heat needed by the boiler efficiency and by the coal's calorific value, and you have kilograms of coal an hour.

What people ask.
How much coal does a 1 ton boiler use per hour?
A boiler making 1 tonne of steam an hour at about 10 bar uses roughly 130 to 160 kg of good Balochistan coal an hour, depending on its efficiency and feed water temperature.
What is the steam to coal ratio?
It is how many kilograms of steam one kilogram of coal makes. For a coal fired boiler in good condition it is usually between 6 and 8.
Which coal is best for a boiler?
Coal with high heat, low ash and low sulphur. Of the Balochistan coals, Sor Range usually fits best, then Chamalang. Check your boiler's sulphur limit.
How can I reduce my boiler's coal consumption?
Return more hot condensate to raise the feed water temperature, keep the right amount of excess air, clean the heating surfaces, and buy coal of steady size and quality.
