Ranked on heat for your money. Fines and Mach coal carry more ash, so mix them with run-of-mine if your kiln struggles with clinker.
Get a price for 68.4 t of Duki run-of-mineNo black box.
A kiln needs a certain amount of heat to fire each kilogram of brick. Zigzag kilns use about 1.05 MJ per kg; old straight-line kilns about 1.4 MJ per kg. Multiply by the weight of a brick (about 3 kg) and the number of bricks, and you have the heat the kiln needs.
Divide that heat by the calorific value of the coal and you have the tonnes of coal. Multiply by the price per tonne and you have the bill. Every kiln is a little different, so open the fine-tune panel and put in your own figures if you know them.

What people ask.
How much coal is needed for 1 lakh bricks?
In a zigzag kiln burning Duki run-of-mine coal, roughly 13 to 14 tonnes per lakh bricks. An old straight-line kiln needs about a third more. The calculator works it out for your kiln and coal.
Which coal is cheapest for a brick kiln?
The cheapest coal per tonne is not always the cheapest per brick. Coal with more heat needs fewer tonnes. The table under the result ranks every grade by cost per 1,000 bricks at today's prices.
How much coal does a zigzag kiln save?
Typically 20 to 30% compared with an old straight-line kiln for the same bricks, because the zigzag path uses the heat in the flue gases better.
How many trucks of coal does a kiln need a month?
A kiln firing 5 lakh bricks a month in zigzag mode needs around 70 tonnes of Duki run-of-mine, about two 22-wheeler loads.
